Listen: Erica Gibson - "Out Of My Mind"
The subject of the latest single from Philadelphian electropop chanteuse, cat lover, teacher, piano and key obsessive Erica Gibson is something we’ve all been guilty of at one time or another. The title “Out Of My Mind” pretty much gives it away: it’s a paean to driving yourself crazy through overthinking… fun, huh?
Co-written with her collaborator Scott Stallone, it’s a song to file alongside the upbeat pop music being made the Toves Lo and Styrke, or BANKS on a sugar rush, and belies Ms. Gibson’s pastime of reading (too much?) about the brain. Following subdued verses that glide through icy proto-R&B, Gibson unleashes a gigantic and addictive chorus, singing: "My head’s on automatic/putting in overtime/make it stop, I’m overthinking/get me get me out of my mind." Suitably enough, like the subject of the song, “Out Of My Mind” deserves a fair bit of continued scrutiny – but rest easy, you only need to enjoy playing the song over and over again, leaving all the mental exercise to the singer and song writer.
