Lauryn Hill marks release from prison by dropping new track 'Consumerism'

R&B singer and former Fugees star, Lauryn Hill will soon end her 3 month prison sentence after being found guilty of owing $1.8m in unpaid taxes, marking her release by releasing this new track, ‘Consumerism’.

Having recently penned an open letter on racism in the legal system, as well as signing a record deal with Sony in an attempt to raise funds to pay off her debts, Hill’s imprisonment seems to have spurred her on artistically.

“I felt the need to discuss the underlying socio-political, cultural paradigm as I saw it. I haven’t been able to watch the news too much recently, so I’m not hip on everything going on,” Hill said of the track. “But inspiration of this sort is a kind of news in and of itself, and often times contains an urgency that precedes what happens.”
