Those tricky 20 Questions were asked to Chris Eaton (vocals, guitar) and Rob Carson (banjo, trombone, guitar) from the excellent Rock Plaza Central.1. Describe your sound in 3 words.
Chris: Jubilant. Intricate. Drunk.
Rob: If you believe almost every review ever written of our new record: “Neutral”, “Milk”, “Hotel”. But what do reviewers know anyway? I think Chris nails it here.
2. Diet coca-cola or normal coke?
Chris:
3. What would be your ideal holiday?
Chris: When you have two jobs that don’t make money, you spend your holidays working for someone else.
Rob: Does time travel count? Because if we’re talking “ideal,” you’re asking for some creativity. I think my ideal holiday would be to join Dylan and the Band in
4. Popcorn: sweet or salted?
Chris: Heavily buttered.
Rob: Sweet popcorn? What is this,
5. What’s on your rider?
Chris: A horse. And on the horse is a another rider.
Rob: But then from there it’s just turtles all the way down.
6. How do you get ready for a live show?
Chris: Hop in a rental van and drive for nine hours.
Rob: Chug three cans of the New Coke right before jumping on stage (seriously, can anyone get me a line on more of this stuff???).
7. Do you have any superstitions?
Chris: I’m actually hugely afraid of startling a flock of birds and one of them flies directly into my head and its beak pierces my temple. Is that a superstition?
Rob: I believe, probably irrationally, I know, that if I keep feeding breadcrumbs to pigeons, they will one day attack Chris in precisely this way.
8. US or
Chris: URL
Rob: If we’re talking about the debut Clash album, I’ll take the
9. Who would win in a fight, a weasel or a badger and why?
Chris: With as much as I know about both these animals, the fight would be like one of episodes of bug’s bunny with daffy duck and I’d be elmer fudd, with my gun shaking between the two of them as they shout “Duck season! Rabbit season! Rabbit season! Duck Season!”.
Rob: The badger. The weasel would try to weasel out of the fight, but the badger would badger him back into it. Badgering always beats out weaselling in my experience. Quod erat demonstrandum.
Chris: Trying to think. I don’t get a lot of time to do this lately. Traded with Malajube, I think. Before that I think I bought a wonderful disc by a local singer named Jennifer Castle, and Amy Winehouse, which I wouldn’t have expected to like but I LOVE it.
Rob: The Henri Faberge record. Full marks, kids. 11. What’s your pet hate?
Chris: Flocks of birds.
Rob: Flock of Seagulls. 12. Bob Dylan or Neil Young?
Chris: Flocks of birds.
Rob: Don’t make me choose. (But Dylan of course.)
13.
Chris: So many of these questions would be better answered by Rob, our banjo/trombone player. I think I should pass this on to him so he can answer too.
Rob: Collected Works of Shakespeare, 38 recordings by the RSC all compressed as MP3s onto 1 DVD. If I’m stuck on that island forever, any piece of music, even one I loved, would make me go crazy. Just look at what happened to Desmond on “Lost.” 14. What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
Chris: I grew up far from a large city, and have never been to any big concerts. TV on the Radio on the weekend was wicked. Also Michelle McAdorey on the same afternoon.
Rob: Neutral Milk Hotel — Horseshoe Tavern,
Chris: Pepperoni. Boring, I know.
Rob: Capers. They can turn even the worst $9 pizza into something delicious. And if you get them on a pizza with potatoes and béchamel, look out. 16. Chinese or Indian takeway?
Chris: Indian.
Rob: Me too. Hey Chris — what do we have lined up for dinner on Friday? 17. Tell us a fact about yourself we probably don’t already know.
Chris: I feel inferior to Rob because he does these things so much better than me.
Rob: I feel inferior to Chris because he writes such good songs, and I’m always trying to make up for it by overcompensating in other areas. Hey Chris, I think we just had a breakthrough! 18. What new music are you currently listening to?
Chris: Several more local acts. The
Rob: Apostle of Hustle. Let’s hope they get famous from this record.
19. If you could travel back in time where would you set the dial?
Chris: Right before the last show in
Rob: Also right before the
Chris: At this moment, Rob. Why did I ask him to do this and show me up?
Rob: Don’t be a hater, Chris. I thought we were making progress.
